Up The Beast Fell Race

Race Report by Bernie Morris

The fell race that truly lives up to its name! ‘The Beast’  saw 100 runners start from Maeshafn with one thing in mind, to run as fast as they could around the course and finish at the Miners Arms for a well deserved pint!

At a little village outside of Mold that backs on to the Clwydian mountain range. We all started off at 7.15 pm up through the woods then down on to a tarmac path where the tough challenge started. A single track went up and over a rocky outcrop to reach the first summit. We then continued on a long downhill to the bottom of the field to be turned back up and a hard scramble to the top of the hill again. A huge descent followed back down to the tarmac. We re-traced our steps through the woods and carried on climbing paths and trails, over and under trees with a great downhill to finish just outside of the pub.

Buckley runners did very well again. With our heads held high we had 3 places in the top 10. Jez Brown crossed the line in 2nd overall with Hayley Evans being the 1st lady home. John Morris was 1st home in the V70 category also. Great results for Buckley Runners on a team front yet but unfortunately we were pipped to the post by Helsby running club who came in 1st having fielded a bigger squad than us, receiving a big bag of spuds for their efforts!

Congratulations to all who took part and thanks to Clwydian Range Runners for putting on a good show!
