Mynydd Myfyr Hill Race – Sunday 29th May 2016
Just 68 runners came out to play in the tranquil village of Trefonen near Oswestry for the 2016 Mynydd Myfyr Hill Race. Buckley were well represented by Peter Roberts, Paul Donoghue, Jez Brown and Karl Williams.
The route is best described as multi-terrain, negotiating some short road sections, farm tracks/footpaths, pastures, and what can loosely be classed as a fell (more a lump). The Shropshire/Welsh borders makes for a perfect setting, especially against the backdrop of a cloudless blue sky that the Oswestry Olympians organisers booked for the occasion.
This is a race of two halves and relatively short in distance at ~3.5-4 miles but it really packs a punch as the elevation profile shows. We lost the toss so had to kick up the hill first half. However, this meant we could take full advantage of the slope during the second half to push for the victory.
And so it came to pass…we put our best man up front and Jez did what Jez does by ensuring the first vest to cross the line was the Royal Blue of Buckley, a full minute ahead of the second place finisher. The rest of us flew the flag high too with Karl coming in 16th, Peter 34th (1st V70) and Paul 35th (see
link for full results).

Unfortunately, while there seemed to be several photographers snapping away on the course, photographs are proving difficult to find.
A truly enjoyable race….no frills, turn up, pay your money and run. At £6 (which goes to the nominated charities) this has to be a real bargain. As an added bonus a fine array of sandwiches, cakes and beverages (not frothy real ale) were on offer at the village hall, where the presentations were held.
For those toying with the idea of sampling what off-road racing is about, while getting a taste of a fell race thrown in, then this is a good opportunity. But don’t wait for 12 months, there are plenty of opportunities coming up for off-road novices, like myself, to get stuck in. See the Club Champs list for the wide variety of events available – have a go, and see if it’s for you (chances are you’ll enjoy it).
